”Here was this guy who has stood by her and been her friend and supported her. She realizes that he has these really true and honorable feelings for her and only wants what she wants for herself. They found each other.”

“I would like to say all the way back in Episode 4 in Season 1 we knew that they had a connection. We also knew that they were going to be the foils for each other and be aggravated with each other. They would constantly be at odds, but we always knew that when you are at odds, that means there is sort of something underneath, whether you like it or not. We knew that they had this spark and it was there for us to play with, at some point, if we wanted to or not. As the seasons progressed and you saw that relationship deepen, it just became more and more of an understanding between all of the writers that there was something real there between Dan and Blair. “ [x] 

“It’s a new kind of relationship for Blair. She’s never dated a friend before,” Safran says. “And here Dan has become one of Blair’s best friends, so that’s obviously a new dynamic for her.” But it’s not just Blair who will have problems with this new romance. Penn Badgley

“Blair, actually. Definitely. I think Blair is Dan’s soul mate. I don’t know if they’re ever going to get together, but I’ll tell you that I’ve never enjoyed any scenes on the show as much as those scenes with Leighton Meester, on a strictly intellectually as an actor. There’s a whole other thing - like everything that happened early on in the show, like the obvious Dan and Serena stuff … that moved me in a different way for obvious reasons, but strictly as an actor, those scenes with Blair are the best.” [x]

“It was actually the most fun I had had on the show in a while,” “It was something new for my character, and I was having fun with the rapport, and I think my dialogue benefited from it. It was actually a lot of fun to work with Leighton. […] We were like the only two who had never really interacted.”

On working with Leighton, he added, “It was great. We all get along pretty impeccably, even after four years. I mean there are ups and downs, as there are in anything. It’s great. I’ve actually really enjoyed working with her.” [x]

Leighton Meester

“They have a funny relationship, and I kind of want to see where that goes because I think it’s cute and it’s not like any relationship with anyone else. I think she kind of is her real self with him.” [x]

“I think from the beginning, we always felt that there was a really strong connection between the two of them,” Savage added. “Actually the first episode that Josh ever wrote for us had one of my favorite scenes of the series, and it was a Dan/Blair scene — where she was confiding in Dan about her feelings about her mother. And the idea that these two people, one is the queen bee and one is the lonely boy, but they actually have a lot in common. Compared to their other friends, the sense that intellectual curiosity and interest in things outside their own world, I mean, they’ve always had a strong connection with each other. It was just a question of was it ever going to become — we always knew they would become friends, but it was a question of whether it would be more than that.” [x]
